David Carroll joined St. Matthew’s as Senior Pastor in June 2009. A graduate of Millsaps College with a degree in sociology, he received his Master of Divinity from Emory University in 1983. An Ordained Elder of the United Methodist Church, David previously served as Associate Pastor at First UMC Corinth, Associate Pastor at First UMC Columbus, Pastor at Moore Memorial UMC in Winona, Associate Pastor at Galloway Memorial UMC in Jackson and most recently as Senior Pastor at Alta Woods UMC in Jackson.

Having worked in United Methodist youth ministry for more than 30 years, David has served in and beyond the local church providing leadership at the district, conference and jurisdictional levels. He has served Mississippi Methodism as a District Youth Coordinator in two districts, as Conference Youth Coordinator in both the former Mississippi Conference and in the newer Mississippi Conference following merger, and as a member of the conference’s Camping Ministries Committee since 1992, chairing the committee since 2000.

From 1992 to 1995, David led Camp Lake Stephens in Oxford through a three-year long-range planning and development process that has been used to guide the camp’s development over the last 15 years. He also serves as a Lead Consultant for Youth Ministry Architects of Nashville, TN.

With co-author Tony Franks, David published a resource for an advanced lay speaking course on preaching in 2001 – From Your Heart to Theirs: Delivering an Effective Sermon. This resource, which was re-released by Discipleship Resources in 2008, has been used in lay speaking schools throughout the U.S.

David is married to the former Laura Elizabeth Smith of Jackson. They have three children -- Benjamin, age 25, who is a student at Duke Divinity School; Kathryn, age 22, a recent graduate of Birmingham Southern College; and Mary Evelyn, age 14, a ninth-grader at Rosa Scott School in Madison. In addition to spending time with his family, David enjoys playing tennis, backpacking, camping, canoeing, speaking to youth and parent groups, and playing guitar.
